New Geographical Indication protection scheme to be introduced
New Geographical Indication protection scheme for craft and industrial products (CIGI) to be introduced.
From 1 December 2025, producers of geographical indications for craft and industrial products (CIGI) can apply for EU-wide protection through a single application process by filing an application on the EUIPO GIportal.
The new system will provide protection for geographical indications for craft and industrial products (CIGI) as provided for under EU Directive 2023/2411.
Ireland has chosen to process applications nationally and will use the EUIPO GIportal for processing all applications. The Intellectual Property Office of Ireland (IPOI) will have responsibility for processing CIGI applications at national level through the GIportal.
Key Benefits:
- Protects authentic regional products
- Boosts tourism and local economies
- Enables international protection via EU trade agreements
Application Process:
- Phase 1: National application via the Intellectual Property Office of Ireland
- Phase 2: EU-level registration via EUIPO
- Applications must include a detailed product specification and supporting documents.
Further information on Geographical Indications is available on the EUIPO website.
Please note:
The EUIPO GIportal will accept applications from 1 December; however, the IPOI will commence national processing of applications only when the national implementing legislation enters into force. Until that date, applications submitted through the GIportal will be received but will not be examined.
Further information will be published once the implementing legislation is in place.
