Examination in Law & Practice of Patents

Due to continuing COVID 19 restrictions, it is proposed to hold an online e-examination in the law and practice of Patents on 26 April, 2022.  The latest date for receipt of applications from persons who wish to sit this examination is 25 March, 2022.

Candidates wishing to be examined must have submitted in advance to the Controller an application form and fee of €200 not later than 25 March, 2022.

The e-examination will be in the same format and same duration (3 hours and 20 minutes) as last year.  Past papers are available on the IPOI website.

The e-examination will be delivered through a software application called TestReach. The software will enable candidates to sit the examination at home or in the office and be supervised online. This means that there is no need to travel to a test centre.

Candidates can sit the e-examination using a computer desktop or laptop and enter the answers to questions on screen.  An online supervisor will connect to candidates using audio, video and remote screenshare, and will be there to support candidates through the examination and make sure the exam is conducted with integrity.

To sit the remotely invigilated exam, candidates will need a standard desktop or laptop with a webcam, a microphone and good quality internet connectivity. Candidates cannot sit the exam on a mobile phone, tablet or Chromebook.  Minimum system requirements for remotely invigilated exams are:

  • A laptop or computer running Windows 7+ or macOS 10.10+
  • Intel Core i3 (or equivalent) and 4GB RAM
  • A working webcam, microphone and speakers.
  • Good continuous internet speed of 516kbps or higher
  • We also recommend a screen size of at least 13" and a resolution of 1024 x 768.
